The Roles and Responsibilities of Governors

The Roles and Responsibilities of Governors

School governors are drawn from different parts of the community and can be parents and staff or from the local authority (LA), the community and other groups. This helps ensure the governing body has sufficient diversity of views and experience.

The main role of the governing body is to have a strategic role for school improvement in order to continue to raise the standards of education and pupil achievement.

Responsibilities

The governing body has a range of duties and powers and a general responsibility for the conduct of the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement. Its responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Monitor and review the performance of the school and pupil achievement
  • Managing the school's finances and recruitment of staff
  • Making sure the curriculum is balanced and broadly based
  • Reviewing staff performance and pay.

Roles and actions

There are a range of roles and actions the governing body or individual governors need to consider:

1. Parent governors: selected by election

2. Staff governors: selected by election from teaching and support staff paid to work at the school

3. Co-opted governors: appointed by the governing body to represent community interests

4. Authority governors: nominated by the Local Authority and appointed by the Governing board

5. Associate members (not governors): appointed by the governing body to attend committee meetings and/or full governing body meetings due to their particular skills or experience.

Committees:

Crossflatts Primary School has the following sub committees:

  • Resources Committee : dealing with finance, staffing and premises
  • School Improvement Committee – curriculum and school improvement

 Mary Morgan

Mary Morgan

Chair of Governors

I have two children who have both attended Crossflatts Primary School.

I wanted to become a school governor as I wanted to help the school develop and improve so that the children, my own included, would receive the best education available.

Being a governor isn’t just about turning up for meetings, it’s about being supportive and sometimes, asking awkward questions but always wanting to make the school a better place for the children so that they can achieve their potential. I enjoy coming into school to meet the children and teachers – talking and listening to what they have got to say and taking this back to the governing body.

I try to get to as many of the Parents Forum meetings as I can so that I can share information from the governor’s meetings with parents. I am usually in the play ground before and after school, so if you have any comments or questions about the school or the governing body, please speak to me and I will do my best to get an answer for you.

 Alycia Dray

Alycia Dray

Parent Governor

I have two children who have both previously attended Crossflatts. I have a long standing connection with Crossflatts as it is the school I attended as a child.

I have worked as a teacher in a primary school in Halifax for the last 18 years and felt I would like to share this experience, as well as learning about the governor side of school life. I am looking forward to working alongside staff and pupils to make our school the best it can be.

I am part of the school PTFA where I help out at many of our school events. Although I work part time I can always be found in and around the school playground at the beginning of the week. If there is anything you would like to find out, please ask and I will do my best to help you.

Mrs Laura Reynolds

Mrs Laura Reynolds

Assistant Head - Staff Governor

I have taught at Crossflatts since 2009, working across Key Stage One and Lower Key Stage Two. Alongside being our mainstream SENCO, I am proud to serve as an Assistant Headteacher, Base Lead for Years 3 and 4, and Lead for Character and Culture.

My leadership roles allow me to support inclusive practice, champion personal development, and help shape the values and ethos that make Crossflatts such a special place to learn and grow. Both of my children have been Crossflatters—both have now moved on with strong foundations, thanks to the start they received at Crossflatts. As both a member of staff and a parent, I’ve experienced the school from multiple perspectives and truly believe in the magic of Crossflatts. I’m incredibly grateful for the education, care and opportunities my own children have received here.

It was an honour to be elected by colleagues to serve on the Governing Body, where I hold the role of Staff Governor for School Improvement. I am passionate about ensuring every child has the opportunity to be the very best version of themselves and feel privileged to contribute to that mission both as an educator and a governor.

Parent Governor

I am a Solicitor and have worked in the legal profession for the past 20 years.

I have twin children who attend Crossflatts, both of whom I have seen flourish and thoroughly enjoy the first years of their education whilst being there.

I am a Governor as I believe the voice of the parent is important in the running of a school.

I am sure the Crossflatts vision to “Come as you are and leave at your best” is something all parents hope for their children and so I am keen to support the continued growth and success of Crossflatts to ensure that our children continue to receive the highest level of education possible.

Parent Governor

My Daughter has attended Crossflatts Primary school for the past 5 years, all of which has been happy and successful. To see the way the school overcame the challenges of Covid and the way they are dealing with RAAC makes me feel immensely proud to be part of the Crossflatts family. I am delighted to have been elected as parent Governor and as Head of Estates at a Local Multi Academy Trust I will use my expertise and passion for education to support Crossflatts Primary School as they continue the journey to ensure all students have the opportunity to succeed and 'leave at their best'
Mr Adrian Lumb

Mr Adrian Lumb

Parent Governor

Crossflatts primary has been a big part of our lives since 2012 when my eldest son walked through the gates in a jumper 3 sizes too big in reception, his brother then joined him and left in 2022, my youngest son Matthew is currently in year 2, We have valued the care and support given to all 3 boys during the Crossflatts journey.

I have enjoyed being a guest in assemblies to several year groups about what I do and the world of engineering as part of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) program. I volunteered to run a year 6 activity after they had completed their SATS and seen some budding engineers, there were bottle rockets flying all over the playground. I was a founding member of the East Morton Beavers and Cubs until recently. This involved organising and risk assessing camps and activities and the planning and organisation of running a successful group.

I have a degree in mechanical engineering and management and have been working as an engineer for over 20 years. During this time I have gained a broad range of skills and specialised experience that can directly help the school in its redevelopment.

My current role is as a senior engineer at a large multinational engineering company specialising in large, complex and safety critical engineering projects. Over the 10 years I have work there I have worked on many projects and have been directly responsible for running projects around $30 million. My engineering experience is varied and includes project management, design work from concept to final design, interpreting and creating drawings, performing and checking calculations, risk assessments and risk mitigation for both project risks and HSE risks, project planning, contracts and budgets, writing and interpreting standards and specifications. I have presented to large audiences both in person and virtually. From previous jobs I have experience in pipework design for plant rooms and pressurised systems

Mr Barney Anderson

Mr Barney Anderson

Parent Governor

I have two children, one is in Reception and the other who will starting nursery at Crossflatts in September and I have been a full time stay at home parent for over 4 years. Safe to say it was the best decision I ever made!

Initially working in a sixth form, I went on to a career in HR working in the publishing and charity sector, most recently at Leeds University Union.

As a parent, I have loved becoming part of the school community over the past couple of years and I am excited to become involved in helping Crossflatts be the best that it can be. I am passionate about education and the positive holistic impact schools can have on children’s lives as they get older.

Mr Richard Murie

Mr Richard Murie

Parent Governor

As a radio broadcaster, producer and journalist I've (very) often spoken about schools, and the issues that they face, in the news bulletins that I've presented over the last 30+ years of my career, which has predominately been in West Yorkshire.

As my son's just started in Reception at Crossflatts Primary, I felt now was the right time to put my money where my mouth has been, literally, and get involved more.

I have worked for local, regional and national broadcasters, commercial and BBC in both staff and freelance positions, including in management and editor roles. Additionally for the past four years I've been teaching on radio and journalism degree courses at the University of Huddersfield, so have some experience at the opposite end of the learning journey.

A proud Bradfordian born and bred, I have lived in/around Bingley for pretty much my entire life, having gone through school myself here and then overseen my now adult stepson and daughter do the same thing, so I've been through it all a couple of times round already!

I hope that I can bring my parental, personal and professional experiences to this role for the benefit of the school and to help make a difference to everyone in the school community.
