The Roles and Responsibilities of Governors
School governors are drawn from different parts of the community and can be parents and staff or from the local authority (LA), the community and other groups. This helps ensure the governing body has sufficient diversity of views and experience.
The main role of the governing body is to have a strategic role for school improvement in order to continue to raise the standards of education and pupil achievement.
The governing body has a range of duties and powers and a general responsibility for the conduct of the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement. Its responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Monitor and review the performance of the school and pupil achievement
- Managing the school's finances and recruitment of staff
- Making sure the curriculum is balanced and broadly based
- Reviewing staff performance and pay.
Roles and actions
There are a range of roles and actions the governing body or individual governors need to consider:
1. Parent governors: selected by election
2. Staff governors: selected by election from teaching and support staff paid to work at the school
3. Community governors: appointed by the governing body to represent community interests
4. Authority governors: appointed by the local authority
5. Associate members (not governors): appointed by the governing body to attend committee meetings and/or full governing body meetings due to their particular skills or experience.
Crossflatts Primary School has the following sub committees:
- Resources Committee : dealing with finance, staffing and premises
- School Improvement Committee – curriculum and school improvement
Mary Morgan - Parent Governor
I have two children, one boy at Crossflatts Primary School, and my other boy is now at secondary school.
I wanted to become a school governor as I wanted to help the school develop and improve so that the children, my own included, would receive the best education available.
Being a governor isn’t just about turning up for meetings, it’s about being supportive and sometimes, asking awkward questions but always wanting to make the school a better place for the children so that they can achieve their potential. I enjoy coming into school to meet the children and teachers – talking and listening to what they have got to say and taking this back to the governing body.
I try to get to as many of the Parents Forum meetings as I can so that I can share information from the governor’s meetings with parents. I am usually in the play ground before and after school, so if you have any comments or questions about the school or the governing body, please speak to me and I will do my best to get an answer for you.
Alycia Dray – Parent Governor
I have two children in Crossflatts Primary school, Isabelle in year 5 and Sam in year 3. I have a long standing connection with Crossflatts as it is the school I attended as a child.
I have worked as a teacher in a primary school in Halifax for the last 18 years and felt I would like to share this experience, as well as learning about the governor side of school life. I am looking forward to working alongside staff and pupils to make our school the best it can be.
I am part of the school PTFA where I help out at many of our school events. Although I work part time I can always be found in and around the school playground at the beginning of the week. If there is anything you would like to find out, please ask and I will do my best to help you.

Leslie Gore – Community Governor
I was born at the beginning of the war, having a younger brother and an older one who unfortunately recently died from cancer. My father was the eldest son of James Gore who started a haulage and coal merchants business in Crossflatts in 1927 and continues today managed by his great grandsons. I was married to Thelma in 1962 and was blessed with a son Ian who attended Crossflatts school whilst we lived in Micklethwaite and then later we built our new home in East Morton.
I have enjoyed a lifetime career in building management having spent my early years with local building company Drummond, Neate and Co Ltd and later as the Clerk of Works managing the Trustees of The Chatsworth Settlement Historic Buildings and Services at The Duke of Devonshire’s Bolton Abbey Estate.
I was invited to join Rotary in 1979 and chaired many committees. After my wife died in 2007, I agreed to take on the office as President. I am inspired by Rotary’s ambitious plan for a Polio free world and I have just returned from my third visit to India in support of the immunisation of children under five years old.
Rotary supports Crossflatts School along with others in district and takes an active part in supporting the community at large.
I am also the Chairman of The Airedale Agricultural Society which engages with the organizing of the Bingley Family Show day.
My appointment as Community Governor of your School will provide an opportunity to support and sustain an environment of educational development, in a happy, friendly school that is reaching out to be a centre of outstanding leadership. Let’s make it happen!
Jean Robinson - Non-Teaching Governor
I am the new manager of the Crazy Cats After School Care Club in the Willows but have a long association with the school as my own children attended and I childminded a number of children who also attended. I founded the toddler group in Crossflatts and ran a preschool for many years.
I live locally and know the school has a good reputation. I have always wanted to become a governor to ensure the school maintains its reputation and continues to use its fabulous location to the best advantage. As After School Club manager I want to ensure that we enhance what the school has to offer. I represent non-teaching staff on the governing board who are
vital to the smooth running of the school. This includes teaching assistants, maintenance managers and lunchtime supervisors to name but a few. Where would we be without them?
Anne Watkinson - Community Governor
am recently retired from my position as School Business Manager at Crossflatts Primary after spending over ten very happy years working with an excellent team of staff and pupils. Prior to this I worked at Copthorne Primary School in Bradford for twenty one years. I started there working as a School Secretary progressing to School Administrator and after doing my qualifications, School Business Manager. During my time working in education on the administrative side I have seen a great number of significant changes and challenges facing schools.
I am the mother of three grown up boys and have a total of seven grandchildren, one boy and six girls! As a parent I was a Governor at my boy’s first and upper schools. Again experiencing the numerous changes and responsibilities involved in being a supportive School Governor.
On retiring I realised that I did not want to lose a close connection or involvement with helping to improve the education of young children, especially the pupils of Crossflatts Primary. As a Governor I hope I can be a part of helping the school continue to be the innovative, successful and happy place it is for children to come to learn to be “the best they can be.”
How to Contact the Governors
If a problem arises for your child with regard to their education - there is a procedure which must be followed:
Make an appointment to meet with the class teacher to discuss the issue and strategies to resolve the issue
If the issue is not resolved-
Make an appointment to meet Headteacher to discuss possible solutions and time frame
If the issue is not resolved-
Write to the Chair of Governors (via the school office or by email). All correspondence will be treated as private and confidential.
A Complaints Committee will consider the issue
The Complaints Committee will respond in writing within 5 working days.
